Keeping Your Balance
Jim Bird, president of the training company WorkLifeBalance.com, offers five tips on how to manage your time at home and in the office.
1 Caffeine intake late in the day causes restless sleep. Drink only decaffeinated coffee or caffeine-free drinks after 2 p.m. It will take about 48 hours for your body to withdraw from the afternoon fix, so be patient if you’re dragging. The payoff is higher energy throughout the day thanks to revitalizing deep sleep.
2 The right work-life balance depends on if you are single, married or have children, as well as if you’re starting your career or are nearing retirement. Wherever you are in life, take at least 20 minutes on the way home from work every day and do something just for yourself.
3 If nobody pats you on the back at work today, pat yourself on the back. And help others do the same. When you are a person who gets things done and enjoys the process, people want you on their team and they want to be on your team.
4 Pick one activity that you think will improve your life most dramatically—such as exercising or eating healthier. To make it a habit, write a reminder in your planner every other day for the next 30 days. Recording it every other day prevents your brain from seeing it simply as familiar print on a page.
5 Differentiate between meeting times and date times. A “meeting” is an action event, where one discusses and resolves business matters. A “date” is play time, where there is no major decision making on the agenda.
