If only all clients were so easy to please...

Bird's jersey number results in longer sentence

Associated Press

Oklahoma City -- A man got a prison term longer than prosecutors and defence lawyers had agreed to -- all because of Larry Bird. The lawyers reached a plea agreement Tuesday for a 30-year term for a man accused of shooting with an intent to kill and robbery. But Eric James Torpy wanted his prison term to match Bird's jersey No. 33. "He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird's jersey," Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said Wednesday. "We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be."

My thanks to Stephanie West-Allan for bringing this article to my attention:

HOFSTRA'S NEW LAW DEAN

... But "more than anything," Twerski said, he wanted students to
understand that the legal profession requires more than technical
proficiency. For Twerski, an ordained rabbi who has not practiced from
the pulpit, the law is a calling. And he wants his students to view it
as such.

"When you go see a lawyer, you're putting your life, or substantial
parts of your life, in his hands, or her hands," Twerski said. "That's
not a job, that's a calling. And I tell my students, and I told them
this at orientation, that if you're not ready to look at this
profession as a calling, where you owe your client not only advice, but
good counsel, psychological back-up because the person's in distress.
If you're not ready to do that, you ought to go out and sell shoes or
tennis rackets."...
