Those Idiots Actually Don't Know Who They Are

Those Who Can't, Don't Know It by Marc Abrahams
in the December 2005 Issue of the Harvard Business Review can be summarized as:

Incompetent people
* don't perform up to speed,
* don't recognize their lack of competence, and
* don't recognize the competence of others.

Once you recognize this fact, you will spare yourself a lot of wasted energy. Why worry, fuss, agonize over the things the idiots do? And why worry what they think of you?

The most common feedback that I got from a group of legal assistants in a course I taught on interpersonal relations can be put this way:

"The most valuable thing for me was to realize that he was not going to change. I stopped trying to reason with him and get him to change and just moved on to figuring out how to get my job done in spite of him."

Such a simple change of perspective or attitude can make all the difference needed in your ability to function in a difficult work environment.

On the other hand, are you the idiot who doesn't realize he is incompetent? I always wondered that myself when I saw these reports come out....
